After 58 hours of traveling we finally reached Oland which is the island mom lived on the summer she lived in Sweden. It was 2:00 in the morning! But Lars and Ulla greeted us and even had food. They are my mom's host family from 1974, they look like grandma and grandpa. And Lars has the same ears as my mom, he has researched mom's family back to the 1700. Now I know where her pointed ears come from. I was tired and everything was new and different. They let me sleep late only I woke up at 6:00 am to say hi to mom and dad. Then I went back to bed. We visited windmills, a Viking fort and a nature preserve. The birds were busy flying south to Africa. I had never thought of birds going south to someplace other than Mexico or South America. When we left Oland we drove to Stockholm and enjoyed dinner and overnight at Ander's home. He has a daughter named Marie who also likes Hip Hop music. We took the subway into Stockholm and visited the old part of the city called Gamla Stad. From Stockholm we went to Vasteras. Two of my exchange brothers Dan and Johan are from that city. It is also the city mom went to school in when she was an exchange student. We picked mushrooms, visited the city and saw Viking Runes. Dan joined us in the car and we headed back to Stockholm to say hi to Tomas. Both of us have changed. I was only two when he was my exchange brother and he still had hair! Then off we went to visit Staffan's family. Poor Staffan we left him behind in America...but rumor has it he was happy at the Kelly's house while we me his family. We traveled to Gothenburg, where Dan lives and ate Swedish Pizza. Then we hopped the ferry with our car for Denmark! Learn More About Sweden |
