Alcohol Myths

Hard liquor is more dangerous than beer, wine or wine coolers . . .. A 12 oz. can of beer, a five ounce glass of wine and a 12 ounce wine cooler contain the same amount of alcohol and the same intoxication potential as an ounce and a half of liquor. All of these affect an unborn baby.

Someone who has had too much to drink will look drunk. . .
The way someone looks can be misleading. One drink can impair ones ability to drive or to abstain from romance. Judgment is the first thing affected when someone has been drinking - motor skills are the second.

What can I say to a friend who has had too much to drink. . .
No one wants to lose a friend, but if you don't say something you may be losing your friend or another friend to an accident. Pull aside your friend in private and politely, but firmly, tell then you cannot let them drive home because you care. Offer to let them spend the night, call a cab or ask another sober person to drive them home.

What if I have a party and there is liquor there . . .
Every state is difference. First underage drinking is illegal and each state has consequences for drinking underage. Mixing drinks, mixing drinks with drugs and drinking a lot in a short time can be especially risky and can lead to coma and death. Second if the party is at your house and there is an accident you could be held responsible for all the medical bills, funeral costs,, property damage and be sued for emotional pain and suffering. For a night of 'riley your whole future and your families future could change. THINK don't serve drinks.

Why can't teens drink if their parents can?
Teens' bodies are still developing and alcohol has a greater impact on their physical and mental well-being. For example, people who begin drinking before age 15 are four times more likely to develop alcoholism than those who
begin at age 21.

How can I say no to alcohol? I'm afraid I won't fit in.
Remember, you're in good company. The majority of teens don't drink alcohol. Also, it's not as hard to refuse as you might think. Try: "No thanks," "I don't drink," or "I'm not interested."

Coffee will sober someone up who has too much to drink. . .
Only time sobers. No amount of coffee, fresh air or cold showers is going to do it.  It takes about one hour for an adult to metabolize each drink. This may be slower in young people. Experts can’t say what is safe for kids of certain ages because your size and the rate your body matures can be so different. If you are pregnant, the baby will take up to three times longer because of it's undeveloped ability to process.

Drinking makes me more sociable and I can work harder. . .
Alcohol is a depressant. You might feel better for a bit. But in the end you will feel worse. As for being able to work harder. It slows you down and you get clumsy and make mistakes. Yeah it makes you work hard because when you sober up you have a lot of work to do to clean up the mess you made.

Eating meat will
keep you sober
. . .
There is no scientific evidence to prove this. Eating a meal does slow down absorpbtion into the body but it does not prevent it!

A liquid lunch
will keep me slim
. . .
Wrong, wrong and more wrong. Alcohol is high in calories and you will gain weight and not get any nutrients.

If I sleep if off
I'll be fine . . .

It takes one hour for an adults liver to remove each drink of alcohol from the system. If you drink a lot the night before you could still be legally drunk when you wake up!

People who drink red wine
live longer. . .

Well, there has been research and purple grape juice is just as good. However the recommendations are limited use (1-2 glasses of red wine) for men over 40 and women after menopause...
Don't think you're THAT OLD!

How can you tell if a friend has a drinking problem?
Sometimes it's tough to tell. But there are signs you can look for. If your friend has one or more of the following warning signs, he or she may have a
problem with alcohol:

  • Getting drunk on a regular basis
  • Lying about how much alcohol he or she is using
  • Believing that alcohol is necessary to have fun
  • Having frequent hangovers
  • Feeling run-down, depressed, or even suicidal
  • Having "blackouts"--forgetting what he or she did while drinking
  • Having problems at school or getting in trouble with the law

What can you do to help someone who has a
drinking problem?

Be a real friend.
You might even save a life.
Encourage your friend to stop or seek professional help.
